THE DELICATE BALANCE IN YOUR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

Almost a century ago, Nobel laureate Dr. Elias Metchnikoff wrote his ground breaking book Prolongation of Life, noting a direct link between healthy intestinal flora and human longevity. Today, many of the world's most brilliant health scientists are using state-of-the-art laboratory technology and research techniques to document Metchnikoff's findings. Modern research is confirming that a healthy balance of human intestinal flora in the digestive tract is closely linked to healing, immune system enhancement, disease prevention and lifespan extension.

Your Internal Ecosystem

The human body contains a myriad of internal ecosystems. Billions of microorganisms coexist within our bodies, sometimes harmoniously, sometimes not. The flora within our gastrointestinal tract make-up perhaps the most vast of these systems. 400 distinct species of intestinal flora make up nearly four pounds of an individual's body weight! They dramatically influence and even direct every person's state of health and well-being-both physical and mental.

If everything is in balance and functioning effectively with metabolism operating at peak levels to provide essential enzymes, nutrients and chemicals to the rest of the body, healthful conditions prevail. The microorganisms work together in a complex, symbiotic relationship to:

  • Guard your body against harmful bacteria, yeast and viruses
  • Stimulate function of the entire digestive system
  • Maintain vital chemical and hormonal balance
  • Produce essential vitamins and regulate their levels
  • Release accumulated toxins from your system
  • Perform a vast number of functions that help maintain high energy levels and proper immune functioning

When the ecology of the gastrointestinal tract is disturbed, however, "friendly" microorganisms can no longer flourish in numbers necessary for proper balance and can quickly become "unfriendly." Such conditions pave the way for harmful toxin-producing bacteria and fungi to begin taking over, further disrupting the delicate balance.

Disrupters

There are many common factors in modern day life and diet that dramatically alter the acid/alkaline levels in the intestines, thereby disrupting the balance of intestinal flora in the gastrointestinal tract. These include stress and many common prescription and over-the-counter drugs such as:

  • Antibiotics
  • Pain killers
  • Anti-inflammatories
  • Birth Control/HRT
  • Cortisones

Excessive consumption of many foods and beverages, typical in the diet of more than ninety percent of Americans, is also a disrupter of this balance. These include:

  • Processed foods
  • Excessive sugar consumption
  • Excessive yeast consumption
  • Meat
  • Rich, fatty foods
  • Dairy products
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Colas and carbonated beverages
  • Chlorinated water

The Consequences

Disruption of the balance of intestinal flora may lead to the over growth of disease causing, putrefactive bacteria that eventually overcome beneficial bacteria, opening the door to an onset of serious health problems. As colonies of unfriendly bacteria grow, they often discharge highly toxic byproducts while reacting with foods in the digestive tract. This reaction can further upset the ecology of the gastrointestinal tract, in essence, slowly poisoning the entire body. Such conditions may be a factor leading to the onset of chronic degenerative diseases such as colon cancer, heart disease, and other extremely serious conditions.

Signs of Gastrointestinal Imbalance

Candida Infections / High Cholesterol Levels / Allergies / Chronic Fatigue / Skin Conditions / Frequent Diarrhea / Rapid Onset of Osteoporosis / Frequent Intestinal Gas / Chronic Bad Breath / Vitamin B Deficiencies / Frequent Constipation / Sensitivity to Dairy Products / Poor Immune Response / Yeast Infections / Chronic Bladder Infections / Chronic Vaginal Infections / Menstrual Problems.

The Answer is Broad-Spectrum Supplementation:

The good news is there is no need to live with gastrointestinal imbalance. Phenomenal breakthroughs in probiotic research have led researchers to a whole new level of understanding of individual strains of intestinal microflora and their benefits.

Researchers now know there are both resident and transient microorganisms in the human gastrointestinal tract. Resident microorganisms, such as different species of bifidobacteria, naturally find a permanent place in the GI tract and thrive there, performing essential digestive functions. Transient microorganisms include food-borne and soil-borne microorganisms that find their way into the human digestive tract to either subtly or dramatically influence the overall health of the human system. They establish small colonies for brief periods of time before dying off or being flushed from the intestinal system through normal digestive processes. Resident and transient microorganisms often have a mutually dependent, symbiotic relationship. Both play a direct and vital role in maintaining superior health and well-being and may have an impact on the life span of the individual.

Researchers have also identified specific types of resident and transient bacteria that provide the most profound benefits, and are key in quickly and effectively reestablishing and maintaining the proper balance necessary for optimizing good health.

Supplementing your usual diet with a probiotic supplement rich in beneficial bacteria could possibly prevent conditions such as these from plaguing your health. "I-Flora Complete Acidophilus is the most powerful probiotic available and uses the patented cellular matrix stabilization process to resist acid digestion with 15 billion viable cells per capsule guaranteed at time of manufacture." It can help to replace the naturally occurring flora that are often disrupted by common every day occurrences such as drinking chlorinated water, excessive sugar consumption, and antibiotic usage.

More About Key Ingredients In I-Flora:

Resident Microorganisms
Resident microorganisms, such as different species of bifidobacteria, naturally find a permanent place in the GI tract and thrive there, performing essential digestive functions.

BIFIDOBACTERIA - Species of this probiotic are known for elimination of pro-carcinogens, altering of pro-carcinogenic enzymes and tumor suppression. The onset of chronic degenerative disease is believed by some researchers to be directly linked to the declining levels of health-giving bifidobacteria in the intestinal tract caused in part by the aging of the human body.

  • Bifidobacteria longum - Researchers report B. longum has been effective in eliminating cancer-causing nitrates commonly found in foods and ingested by humans.
  • Bifidobacteria bifidum - Medical journals report that B. bifidum is a supportive therapy for intestinal infections and intestinal disturbances, has immune strengthening properties and anti-ulcer effects, and may protect against the pathogenic bacteria Salmonella.
  • Bifidobacteria infantis - The Journal of Applied Bacteriology reports that B. infantis has an inhibitory effect on invasive pathogenic bacteria such as some strains of E. coli. It's also reported to protect against gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and bowels) and clearly produces compounds with anti-proliferative activity useful in the prevention and therapy of solid tumors like breast cancer.
  • Bifidobacterium lactis - Research studies show, in addition to its antimicrobial properties, B. lactis may help alleviate constipation, prevent diarrhea and decrease chronic inflammation of the sigmoid colon.
  • Bifidobacterium breve - Is beneficial for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, prevents rotavirus-induced diarrhea and activates the humoral immune system.

LACTOBACILLUS - Species of this probiotic exhibit a wide variety of health-enhancing effects.

  • Lactobacillus paracasei - Research shows L. paracasei effective in the prevention and treatment of certain types of diarrhea and demonstrates its ability to modulate the immune system and perhaps reduce the risk of some cancers.
  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus - Researcher Brochu with the Institute Rosell reports, "L. rhamnosus may be considered as one of the most important lactobacilli, if not the best." L. rhamnosus has been associated with the prevention or alleviation of diverse intestinal disorders such as lactose intolerance, viral and bacterial diarrhea, adverse effects of abdominal radiotherapy, constipation, inflammatory bowel disease, and food allergy. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of colon tumors, has demonstrated an increased resistance to yeast infections and urinary tract infections. Deficiency has been linked with sexually transmitted diseases including AIDS and bacterial vaginosis.
  • Lactobacillus salivarius - This microorganism has the unique ability to eradicate the dreaded Helicobacter pylori bacteria, which is now known to be the major cause of peptic ulcers. It is also effective against pathogenic organisms such as Salmonella typhimurium.
  • Lactococcus lactis - Lactis is a natural antibiotic, which reduces the ability of pathogenic bacteria to grow and cause infection. It is especially effective against the bacteria Listeria monorytogenes, which causes severe food poisoning.
  • Lactobacillus brevis - Research studies show that L. brevis decreases intestinal permeability, improves intestinal microflora, and has a positive effect on the immune system.
  • Lactobacillus casei - This microorganism is reported in Microbiology & Immunology to have the most potent protective activity against the Listeria bacteria, which proves lethal to 30% of those infected by it. Listeriosis is most commonly transmitted through the consumption of contaminated dairy products or raw vegetables. The most common manifestation of listeriosis is meningitis, which left untreated can result in coma and death.
  • Lactobacillus plantarum - An excellent alternative to antibiotics, L. plantarum is capable of metabolizing semi-resistant fibers, such as onion, garlic, artichoke, wheat, oat, rye, bananas, and yeast. It is also an important tool in antimicrobial defense.
  • Lactobacillus acidophilus - By far, the most well researched bacterial resident of the small intestine is L. acidophilus. This is the colonizer that constitutes the first line of defense against invading pathogens, as well as opportunistic organisms like yeasts, which can take over the area and spread throughout the body when the defensive forces are weakened. L. acidophilus bacteria even helps keep your heart healthy by helping lower the levels of cholesterol in your blood.
  • Lactobacillus gasseri - Has effects on both suppressing H. Pylori and reducing gastric mucosal inflammation, and hypocholesterolemic effect.

Transient Microorganisms
These food-borne and soil-borne microorganisms make their way into the human digestive tract, subtly or dramatically influencing the overall health of the human system.

  • Lactobacillus bulgaricus - Known for alleviating digestive problems (including acid reflux) and taming a runaway appetite, L. bulgaricus also provides overall support to resident bacteria. It is recommended for enhanced digestibility of milk products and other proteins, production of natural antibiotic substances, inhibition of undesirable organisms, maximum effectiveness of waste disposal, colon cleansing without disrupting friendly bacteria, and effective immune enhancement.
  • Streptococcus thermophilus - Well known for its antioxidant activity, S. thermophilus also displays anti-tumor activity, especially as related to colon cancer cell growth, is effective in treating diarrhea as well as intestinal and vaginal infections, generates lactase activity, facilitating the digestion of lactose in milk, and has played a significantly positive role in inhibiting ulcer formation.
